I dreamt I was in line to get candy from a large, old fashioned red gumball machine. The ones with the twisting slide so you could watch the gumballs ride down to the bottom of the dispenser.
There was a man standing by the machine. He was calling people over, telling them to stand in line and get some candy while they can. The line was long. Everyone was getting yellow, red, green, and brown candies.
It was my turn. I twisted the dial to dispense my candy but out came a handful of glowing blue pebbles. The man standing by the dispenser and a few people around me looked at the rocks with surprise. “How did you get blue rocks while we got candy?” They asked.
“There never was any candy, they were always rocks.” I said.
They looked at the candy in the machine’s glass globe and saw it was all blue rocks. Some people looked in their hands and saw their candy had turned into blue rocks. “How did you know?” They asked me.
“I always knew they were rocks. I saw them for what they were.”
“What do you mean?” The man by the gumball machine asked.
“The rocks are my point of view. You all see sweet candy to consume but I see something else.”
“We see the blue rocks now too. Does that mean we see as you do?” The man asked.
“Yes but not completely. You see what I see, but do you really see my point of view? Everything we say and do means nothing. This conversation right now, means nothing.”
Some people dropped their rocks. They all stared at me waiting for more; desolation in their faces.
“We will remember this conversation for a short time. Then we will move on with our lives and forget this memory. The rocks will turn back to candy. In time, we will die and it will be as if this never happened.
“We will be gone but the rocks will remain. Other people will come and go. Some will see rocks, some will see candy. They too will eventually forget and pass away.
“In time, the rocks will turn to dust. The earth will turn to dust and the universe will turn to dust. Nothing in this moment matters because no one will be around to remember it. Those before us have passed, we will pass, and those after us will pass. The universe will eventually pass too. Nothing we do matters.”
Then everything went dark except for the soft glow of the blue rocks.
