The Crow With One Wing

I dreamt.

I was a scientist that studied the behaviors between crows and tried to see if there was a way to break the language barrier between our species. My role was to understand and interpret the sounds and body language of the crows and to compile a list of meanings. This was a part of a human-animal interspecies communication project.

I was in my backyard and there were a pair of crows that I watched over. One of them had a wing missing and was very beaten up. It was an old crow that was seasoned by many battles, a veteran. The other crow was a younger caretaker, it brang food to the old crow, groomed it and kept it company.

The young crow was fond of me. It was of a younger, more open minded generation. It understood that I was trying to understand them for good reasons. The old crow did not trust me, it had seen much of the violence and destruction Humans were capable of doing. It simply ignored me. I respected its choice and left it alone as much as possible.

I interacted with the young crow for a few months. We began to understand each other and communicate basic concepts. We shared a love of grapes, taking a bath, taking care of others and appreciating the beauty of nature. We both shared a dislike of small dogs, the way asparagus grows and Humanity in general. We agreed that Humanity was capable of wonderful things, such as this communication project, and Humans can be full of kindness and love. But we were both pessimists, we focused on the bad qualities and deeds within Humanity and agreed that Humanity as a whole will only bring destruction to this planet. We both wished for a Human-free future.

The old crow then came around when it learned that I did not like other people. It shared tales of its travels. Tales of the places it has been, the creatures it’s met, and the strange/wonderful/terrible things it’s seen.

We became friends. I decided to falsify small details of my research to throw off any future research. Humans would probably use this information to subjugate the crows anyway.
