A Poem to Aging in Society

July 08, 2024, Snickerdoodle

I hope I'll have friends when I'm old.
I won't have any kids, so
there won't be anyone to take care of me.

I look at my aged parents:
verbally abusive,
emotionally manipulative,
argumentative towards each other.
I know I'll be the same kind of parent to any kids I have,
so I won't have any.
I don't want to turn into my parents.

So I hope I'll have friends when I'm old.
I'll take care of them and
Maybe they can help me a little.
We'll take care of each other because
no one else will be able to.
Society won't care,
Eldercare will be pushed farther down the priority list.
Caretakers will seek better jobs due to
the boomers and bosses pushing them farther down in priority.
One day everyone will push us elders off the list.

My future friends,
Please put up with my flaws and I'll put up with yours.
I'll take care of you.
In turn, just remember me.
We’ll have each other.
